Sometimes a project comes together so well that you need to step back and appreciate what you've built. Our recent Pascoe Vale job is one of those.
The brief was straightforward enough. The clients wanted to transform their backyard into a functional outdoor living area that looked impressive but didn’t require constant maintenance. They wanted something that would handle Melbourne’s weather without falling apart in couple of years.
Fair enough. That’s exactly the kind of work we love.
What We Built
The centrepiece of this build is the burnished concrete bench seating with an integrated fire pit. Instead of buying separate furniture that needs covering or storing every winter, we created a permanent seating area that’s as practical as it is good looking. The burnished finish gives it that smooth, polished appearance while being tough enough to handle whatever gets thrown at it.
The steps leading up to the seating area flow naturally into the design. We used the same burnished concrete treatment to create visual continuity across the space. No awkward transitions, no mismatched finishes. Just clean lines and solid construction.
The retaining wall ties the whole project together. It manages the level changes in the yard while providing structure and definition to different zones. Landscaping elements including bamboo screening for privacy, which softens the concrete and creates that indoor-outdoor connection.
Why Burnished Concrete Works for Melbourne Backyards
Burnished concrete isn’t just about aesthetics, though it certainly delivers on that front. The process involves mechanically polishing the concrete surface to create a dense, smooth finish that’s naturally resistant to staining and moisture penetration.
For Melbourne homeowners, this means your outdoor surfaces can handle our unpredictable weather. Heavy summer rain, winter frost, UV exposure during those scorching February weeks. Burnished concrete takes it all without cracking, fading, or requiring constant resealing like some other finishes.
It’s also incredibly low maintenance. A quick sweep and occasional hose down is basically all you need. No special treatments, no annual restoration work, no expensive repairs three years down the track.
The Fire Pit Element
Adding the fire pit to the bench seating was a smart move by the clients. It extends the usability of the outdoor space well beyond summer. Autumn evenings, winter gatherings, even cool spring nights become opportunities to use the backyard rather than being stuck indoors.
We built the fire pit directly into the concrete structure, which means it’s permanent, safe, and properly integrated with the overall design. No wobbly store-bought options that rust out or become fire hazards.
What Made This Project Work
Good design starts with listening. The clients knew what they wanted their outdoor space to feel like, even if they didn’t have the technical language to describe it. Our job was to translate that vision into something buildable, durable, and within budget.
We also had the right team on site. Burnished concrete requires skill and experience to get the finish right. Too much polishing and you can damage the surface. Not enough and you don’t get that characteristic smooth appearance. Our crew has been doing this long enough to know exactly where that sweet spot is.
